Why is Carbon Used to Filter Water? Carbon is probably the most absorbent material known to man. It’s widely used in water filtration AND air filtration. Carbon’s uniqueness comes from its ability to adsorb impurities into its thousands of tiny pores. In fact, 1 pound of carbon has the filtering surface area of 100 football fields.
Granular Activated Carbon – Activated carbon is produced by heating organic matter, such as coal, wood or coconut shell, in the absence of air, which is then crushed into carbon granules. Because granular activated carbon is positively charged, it’s able to remove negatively charged contaminants from water such as chlorine, fluorides and dissolved organic solutes by absorption.
