About Reverse Osmosis

City water treatment removes dirt and debris while adding chlorine to prevent the spread of diseases, producing unpleasant taste and odor in municipal water. However, it does not remove the dissolved minerals and contaminants from the water. With the increasing pollution of our surface and ground water with natural or man-made contaminants such as nitrates, perchlorates, and pesticides, it is more important than ever to have a way to remove them at the point of use. The Standard Filtration System first uses a sediment filter to remove particles such as sand and rust as small as 5-microns. The second-stage activated-carbon filter eliminates chlorine and its taste and odor. The Reverse Osmosis filtration system removes an average of 95% of dissolved contaminants and minerals from the water at the molecular level including those that cause scale deposits.

Installation tips

  • Shut off the water supply and open the RO faucet to relieve pressure before replacing the membrane.
  • Disconnect the tubing and remove the membrane housing cap.
  • Pull out the used membrane with needle-nose pliers if needed—discard after removal.
  • Insert the new 50 GPD membrane, ensuring the brine seal is properly seated in the housing.
  • Tighten the housing cap securely and reconnect all tubing.
  • Turn water back on and allow the system to flush for 2–3 minutes.
  • For best performance, let the RO tank fill completely, then drain once before normal use.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace the RO membrane in my Vertex bottleless PureWaterCooler?
The RO membrane should be replaced every 24–36 months, depending on water quality and usage. If you notice reduced flow, slower tank fill, or higher TDS levels, replacement may be needed sooner.

Do I need to replace all filters when I replace the RO membrane?
Yes. Vertex recommends changing the sediment and carbon pre-filters on schedule (every 6–12 months). Clean pre-filters protect the RO membrane and extend its lifespan.

Will this 50 GPD RO membrane fit all Vertex PureWaterCooler models?
It fits most Vertex PureWaterCooler bottleless coolers equipped with a standard RO system. Always verify your model or check your existing membrane label before ordering. See a list of models in the 'About this Product' section above.

How do I know if my RO membrane needs replacement?
Common signs include:

  • Water tastes “flat” or has noticeable impurities
  • Slower dispensing or slow tank refill
  • Higher TDS reading than normal
  • Aged membrane (over 2–3 years in service)

Do I need special tools to install the RO membrane?
No. The membrane installs into a standard RO housing. Most users can replace it with basic hand tools by removing the housing cap, swapping the membrane, and flushing the system.
